What is root canal treatment?

Inside every tooth is the pulp, the tissue we usually call the “nerve”. When deep decay, a fracture or a knock reaches it, the pulp can become inflamed or infected and cause severe pain or an abscess.

During root canal treatment we clean and disinfect the canals inside the tooth and seal them. The tooth then stops hurting and can stay in your mouth for many years.

When might you need a root canal?

We can only confirm it after examining the tooth and taking an X-ray, but these are the most common signs:

  • Severe or persistent pain, especially if it wakes you at night.
  • Sensitivity to cold or heat that lingers after contact.
  • Swelling of the gum or face around a tooth.
  • A tooth that has darkened or taken a hard knock.

The treatment, step by step

  1. DiagnosisExamination and digital X-ray at the clinic to check the root and the surrounding bone.
  2. AnaestheticWe work under local anaesthetic so the treatment is comfortable.
  3. Cleaning the canalsWe remove the inflamed or infected tissue and disinfect the inside of the tooth.
  4. SealingWe fill and seal the canals so bacteria cannot get back in.
  5. RebuildingWe rebuild the tooth and, if it is very weak, recommend a crown to protect it.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions about root canal treatment

Does a root canal hurt?

It is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the treatment. In the following days the tooth may feel a little tender when chewing; this is usually controlled with ordinary painkillers.

How many appointments are needed?

Many root canals are done in a single appointment. If there is a significant infection, it is sometimes better to do it in two visits. We will explain before we start.

What happens if I don’t have it done?

The infection does not go away on its own: it can get worse, cause an abscess and eventually lead to losing the tooth. That is why it should not be left.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

It depends on how much healthy tooth remains. Back teeth and heavily restored teeth usually need a crown so they do not break. We assess each case.

Does a root-treated tooth last?

Yes. Properly sealed and rebuilt, and with good hygiene and check-ups, a root-treated tooth can last for many years.
