What is a dental implant?

An implant is a small post, usually made of titanium, placed in the jawbone to act as the root of a tooth. Once it has bonded with the bone, a crown, bridge or denture is attached to replace the visible part of the tooth.

The result is a fixed tooth that lets you eat, speak and smile naturally, without touching the neighbouring teeth.

When is an implant recommended?

Not everyone is a candidate at the same moment: at the first visit we assess the bone, the gums and your general health.

  • You have lost a tooth to decay, a fracture or gum disease.
  • You are missing several teeth and want to avoid a removable denture.
  • Your denture moves and you would like it to be fixed.
  • A tooth needs to be extracted and you want to plan how to replace it.

The treatment, step by step

  1. First visitExamination, digital X-ray at the clinic and an explanation of your options, with a written quote.
  2. PlanningWe work out the ideal position of the implant based on the available bone and the tooth to be replaced.
  3. PlacementUnder local anaesthetic, in a procedure carried out at the clinic.
  4. HealingThe implant bonds with the bone over a period that depends on each case. If needed, you will wear a temporary tooth.
  5. Final toothWe fit the crown, bridge or denture and check your bite.
  6. Check-upsRegular check-ups and professional cleaning so the implant lasts for many years.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions about implants

Does getting an implant hurt?

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. In the following days some swelling or discomfort is normal and is usually controlled with the medication we prescribe.

How long does the treatment take?

It depends on each case. A few months usually pass between placing the implant and fitting the final tooth, so that the implant bonds properly with the bone. At the first visit we will explain the expected timeline.

How much does a dental implant cost?

The price depends on the number of implants, the type of tooth or denture and whether any preliminary treatment, such as a bone graft, is needed. After the first visit and X-ray we will give you a detailed written quote.

How long do implants last?

With good home care and regular check-ups, implants can last for many years. Smoking, poorly controlled diabetes and gum disease increase the risk of failure.

What if I have no teeth left?

In many cases a full denture can be fixed onto several implants so it does not move when you eat or speak. We assess this at the first visit.
