ORTHODONTICS

Orthodontics in Palamós for children and adults

We guide jaw growth and straighten teeth, at any age.

Orthodontics does more than move teeth: while a child is still growing, it can also guide how the jaws develop. That is why we always start with a thorough assessment and then choose the most suitable treatment.

What does orthodontics treat?

Orthodontics corrects malocclusions: problems with the position of the teeth and with how the upper and lower jaws relate to each other. They can be dental (crowded, rotated or gapped teeth) or skeletal (a jaw that is too narrow, set back or too far forward).

A good bite is not just about looks: it helps you chew, breathe and speak properly, makes cleaning easier and protects teeth and gums from wear in the long term.

First of all, guiding growth

The Spanish Society of Orthodontics (SEDO) recommends a first orthodontic check-up at around age 6, when the first permanent molar comes through. At this stage we can still influence the bones, not just the teeth.

With interceptive orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics we can widen a narrow upper jaw, correct crossbites, guide the position of the lower jaw, keep space for the permanent teeth and help stop habits such as thumb-sucking or mouth breathing.

Acting early often makes later treatment simpler and shorter, or even unnecessary.

Treatment options

Depending on age and each case, we combine the following options:

01

Interceptive orthodontics and orthopaedics (children)

For growing children, usually between 6 and 10. With simple appliances such as expanders, we guide jaw growth and correct bite problems early.

02

Metal braces

Conventional fixed orthodontics: small steel brackets joined by a wire. Very strong and effective, they suit almost every case, including the most complex.

03

Ceramic braces

They work just like metal braces but are tooth-coloured and much less noticeable. A fixed, discreet option.

04

Invisible orthodontics: Invisalign® and Spark™

Custom-made clear aligners that are changed every one to two weeks and move the teeth gradually. Almost invisible and removable for eating and brushing. They need to be worn for at least 20–22 hours a day.

At the first assessment we will explain what treatment you need and the best time to start it.

When is it recommended?

Orthodontic treatment can be done at almost any age, as long as the teeth and gums are healthy. Some common reasons:

  • Crowded, rotated or gapped teeth.
  • The bite does not fit well: the upper teeth stick out too much or sit behind the lower ones.
  • In children, to guide growth and the eruption of the permanent teeth.
  • In adults, before other treatments such as implants or crowns, to position the teeth correctly.

The treatment, step by step

  1. First assessmentExamination, X-ray and a study of your bite to find the right type of treatment.

  3. FittingWe fit the braces or give you your first aligners, with instructions for wear and hygiene.
  4. Check-upsRegular visits to adjust the treatment and check that everything is progressing as planned.
  5. RetentionAt the end, a retainer helps keep the teeth in their new position.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions about orthodontics

At what age should the first orthodontic check-up be?

The Spanish Society of Orthodontics recommends it at around age 6, when the first permanent molar comes through, so that growth and bite problems can be detected in time.

What is interceptive orthodontics?

It is treatment for growing children that guides jaw development and corrects the bite before all the permanent teeth have come through. It often simplifies or avoids longer treatment later on.

Do you offer Invisalign in Palamós?

Yes. We offer invisible orthodontics with Invisalign® and Spark™, as well as metal and ceramic braces. At the first visit we assess whether aligners are suitable for you.

What is the difference between metal and ceramic braces?

They work the same way. Ceramic braces are tooth-coloured and much less noticeable; metal braces are the strongest and usually the most affordable option.

I’m an adult – can I still have orthodontic treatment?

Yes. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, orthodontics can be done at any age. In adults growth can no longer be modified, but the teeth can be straightened and the bite improved.

How long does treatment take?

It depends on each case. Some treatments take a few months and others more than a year. At the first assessment we will give you an approximate duration.
