What is restorative dentistry?

It is the part of dentistry that repairs teeth damaged by decay, fractures or wear, restoring their shape, function and appearance.

The sooner decay is treated, the smaller the filling and the more healthy tooth is kept. That is why check-ups matter so much.

When is a restoration needed?

The most common reasons are:

  • Decay found at a check-up or on an X-ray.
  • Broken or cracked teeth.
  • Old fillings that are worn, leaking or discoloured.
  • Tooth wear from grinding (bruxism) or age.

The treatment, step by step

  1. DiagnosisCheck-up and, if needed, a digital X-ray to see how far the decay or fracture goes.
  2. AnaestheticWhen needed, we use local anaesthetic so you feel no discomfort.
  3. RestorationWe remove the damaged tissue and rebuild the tooth with a tooth-coloured material.
  4. FinishingWe polish and check your bite so the tooth feels comfortable and natural.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions about fillings

Does a filling hurt?

Usually not. If the decay is deep, we use local anaesthetic. Afterwards you may notice slight sensitivity for a few days.

How long do fillings last?

It depends on their size, position and your habits. With good hygiene and check-ups, they can last many years.

Can I eat afterwards?

With today’s aesthetic materials you can eat straight away, although if you have had an anaesthetic it is best to wait until it wears off.

Can old dark fillings be replaced?

Yes. If they are worn or you do not like how they look, they can be replaced with tooth-coloured restorations.
