Why have a professional clean?

Even if you brush well, plaque and tartar build up over time in places the brush cannot reach. Tartar cannot be removed at home and is one of the main causes of gum inflammation.

A professional clean removes this tartar and surface stains, and the check-up that goes with it lets us spot problems while they are still small.

According to the Spanish General Council of Dentists, one in three adults in Spain has some form of gum disease. In the early stages it often does not hurt, which is why regular check-ups matter so much.

How often should it be done?

For most people we recommend a clean and check-up every 6 to 12 months. It may be worth coming more often if:

• You tend to build up tartar or have inflamed gums.
• You have implants, bridges or orthodontic appliances.
• You smoke or have diabetes.
• You are pregnant, as the gums are more sensitive.

If you have had periodontitis, the European Federation of Periodontology recommends regular maintenance visits at an interval tailored to your risk (between 3 and 12 months).

The clean, step by step

1. Check-upWe look at your teeth, gums and fillings and, if needed, take an X-ray.
2. AirflowWith the Airflow system, a gentle jet of water, air and a very fine powder, we remove bacterial plaque and stains from coffee, tea or tobacco, including between the teeth and around implants and braces.
3. Satelec ultrasonic scalerWith a Satelec ultrasonic scaler we loosen hardened tartar, including just below the gum line, using gentle vibrations and water.
4. Polishing with prophylaxis pasteWe polish the teeth with a prophylaxis paste so the surface is smooth and shiny, which makes it harder for plaque to stick.
5. FlossingWe floss between every tooth to clean the spaces the brush cannot reach and check that no tartar is left.
6. Fluoride traysTo finish, we place trays with fluoride gel for a few minutes. Fluoride strengthens the enamel, helps prevent decay and reduces sensitivity. Afterwards, it is best not to eat or drink for 30 minutes.
